Zen and typewriter modes

Zen mode

Ctrl+Shift+Z hides the file tree, the tabs, the toolbar, the right panel, and the status bar, and leaves only the text. Press it again, or click the button at the bottom right, to come back. On a Mac, zen mode is ⌃⌘Z, since ⇧⌘Z is Redo there.

Options in Settings > Usability:

• Zen exit button: auto-hide until you point at it, always visible, or never shown.
• Zen enters full screen: take the window full screen along with zen mode.
• Zen hides frontmatter: drop the frontmatter while you write.
• Zen padding: extra space above and below the text.

Typewriter mode

Ctrl+Shift+T keeps the line you are writing at one height on the screen, and the text scrolls under it as you type.

Options in Settings > Usability:

Option	What it does
Typewriter position	How far down the editor the line sits, from 20 to 80 percent. Center is the default.
Typewriter focus	Fade everything except the paragraph, the sentence, or the line you are on. Off by default.
Faded text	How visible the faded text stays.
Typewriter line	Mark the line you are on with a highlight or an underline.
Recenter on click	Also move the page when you click to place the caret, not only as you type.
Typewriter only in zen mode	Use typewriter mode only while zen mode is on.

By default, clicking somewhere to reread it doesn’t move the page. The page follows the caret when you type, delete, undo, or move with the keyboard.
